Complementary Colors

Complementary colors are simply the opposite colors in a color wheel, and opposite colors provide you with the highest color contrast in a composition. Let's take a look at a color wheel..

I keep the color wheel image on my mobile phone, to reference it when composing a photo.. If you want the highest contrast and image pop, you need to choose complementary colors for the different elements in your composition. How good is the background color? Will a color gel on one of the lights be better? Do I need different color props? .. and so on. No rush, you need to get the photo you like.

Of course, there are color wheels with more colors, if you want to see more options & perhaps get more ideas.

Let's go over some samples

FUJIFILM FinePix X100 at f/2 in Bright Daylight

The wide f/2 aperture, was one of the reasons I decided to get the X100.. It allows for an acceptable bokeh with its APS-C sensor. I was too distracted with the aperture, that I missed reading about a limitation, the X100's shutter cannot go faster than 1/1000 at f/2.

X100_aperture_vs_shutter_speeds

Hold on.. 1/1000 is too fast, why would I even need it? Well, at f/2 and bright daylight, 1/1000 will allow too much light to get in, resulting in an over exposed photograph. So, what are the options?

You can chose one of the following solutions:

  1. Reduce the aperture to f/4 or tighter... Or
  2. Enable the built-in ND (Neutral Density) Filter.

Reducing the aperture is an easy and straight forward solution, but it will sacrifice the shallow depth of field of a wide aperture, allowing more elements of your composition to be in-focus.

The second solution is to enable the built-in ND filter, which will reduce the exposure by 3 EV.. To me, this is better.. I can keep my beautiful bokeh, without any sacrifices.. Perfect.

So, how do you enable it? Just go to the menu, and switch it ON

X100_nd_filter

To reduce the hassle of navigating through the menus every time I need to use the ND, I can just program the Function Button (Fn) to active/deactivate ND. You can program the Fn from this menu options

X100_fn_button
Now you're ready to access the ND Filter whenever you need

I hope you found this little tip useful.. If you have any question, please leave a comment..

Enjoy :)

Lemon Jello

We start by cutting the lemon in half, from top to bottom, and gutting out everything inside. The helf-lemon shells will be used as molds for the jello.

1-uz3h1507

2-uz3h1510
Later, you mix any type of jello.. We prefer Lime flavor, it would go nicely with the smell of the natural lemon.

3-uz3h1512
4-uz3h1513

Then, use a spoon to pour the liqued jello in the lemon molds

5-uz3h1518
6-uz3h1521
Keep them in the firdge for a few hours to cool down and harden; I prefer to leave them overnight. Then, you cut them in halfs (again, top to bottom), resulting in nice presentable shapes.

7-uz3h1522
Enjoy :)

DIY, Bouncing Water Drops #365photoAR

A friend and coworker, Alain Riccobene, told me about this trick and I decided to try it.. I never knew that tiny little water dropps would bounce off the surface when poured like this example.. Let's start, here's the setup:

Setup

And here's a video of how the drops should pour & roll off the surface:

Now, the result :)

Uz3h1493

A couple of points you need to think of:

  • The water will be pouring, and for that you'll need a fast shutter speed and lots of light.
  • Increasing ISO can help you with that, but with grains.

Have fun trying :)

Droplets

All these years of photography and I've never ever tried shooting droplets of water.. I came across this YouTube video by PhotoGavin and I was enouraged to try :)

How I made the Shutter shot

Compiled
Fayiz Melibary, a.k.a. Dentographer, asked me how I made the above shot.. Why was it done in multiple shots instead of just one. I thought a blog post would be more appropriate..

I won't get into the details of Photoshop, just the general method.

Two cameras were used, the subject was a Canon EOS-550D with a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II with the aperture set to f/16 and the shutter speed set to 30 seconds. This means the shutter or iris will remain closed for 30 seconds only, and I need to make the shot in that time.

Dscf0021s

The main camera was a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS, and it's the one capturing the images. The room was completely dark and the LED flashlight was the only light source, used at different angles and distances.

Three shots were made and blended for the final result, and they were:

1
2
3
All three were made with just the light at different angles and distances. The 1st one is the hero, and the other two will be used to compliment it.

At first, I blended the last two, to make sure I get the contrasty effect between the reflections and the clearer shutter/iris blades:

Screen_shot_2012-03-06_at_9
They were then merged (flattened), and the resulted image was then layered with the 1st hero shot:

Screen_shot_2012-03-06_at_9
The hero shot was almost complete, I just needed to lighten the blue haze to make the center hole and blades clearer, and this is where I used a reflected gradient for the mask to only show the center+reflections from the blend I did in the beginning (The mask will give you control over what parts of the layer you would like to make transparent).

If you have any questions, just comment.. The high-res can be found on my flickr page :)
